What is the Portuguese Golden Visa?
​
The Portuguese Golden Visa program was launched by the Government to grant resident status to all real estate investors and respective families wishing to invest in Portugal. This is done through eligible investments and available to any citizen outside of the EU.
Once the Golden Visa residency permit is granted, you will have the right to:
​
​Reside in Portugal during the whole duration of your visa;
Work, Live and study within Portugal
Travel freely, without visa, through the 26 Schengen countries of the European Union;
You may also obtain Portuguese citizenship after a period of 5 (five) years, with the same right of anyone in Portugal and the European Union;
Right to family reunion in Portugal and the European Union.

Holders of a Portuguese Golden Visa card are given a temporary residence permit in Portugal for two years, which is renewable for two-year periods. After five years holders of the Golden Visa can apply for a permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship (and passport), if all other legal requirements are met.

How to apply and what are the requirements?
​
The Portugal golden visa program allows family reunion, permitting the following family members to join the golden visa holder in Portugal:
​
Spouse / husband, dependent children, adopted children, full-age dependent children who are still engaged in study (and single), dependent parents of either the golden visa holder or spouse, minor dependent brothers or sisters who are under guardianship of the golden visa holder.
​
Family members receive the same rights, and will also be eligible for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship after five years in the Golden Visa Program. The Portuguese Golden Visa program requirements may vary according to your level of investment, However the investor is required to obey the following:
​​
You need to keep your investment for a period of 5 years; The funds must come from outside into Portugal; A valid document for legal entry and stay in Portugal; No references in Portuguese Immigration and Schengen Services; No criminal record; 7 days minimum stay in Portugal per year.
​
It´s eligible to this residency program all third-country citizens who conduct an investment activity, as an individual business person or through a company set up in Portugal or in another EU Member State and who, in addition, are stably settled in Portugal, provided these citizens fulfil the quantitative requirements and the time requirements set out by the relevant legislation, may apply for a Residence Permit for Investment.

Eligible investments for the Golden Visa program
​
The current investment options that are eligible for the Portugal Golden Residence Permit Program are:
Capital transfer: one of the following options
-
EUR 500,000 for the acquisition of investment fund or venture capital fund units committed to the capitalization of companies incorporated under the Portuguese law, with a maturity of at least five years and with at least 60% of the investment portfolio in companies with a registered office in the national territory (real estate entities do not apply);

EUR 500,000 for research activities of public or private entities that are part of the national scientific and technological system. EUR 400,000 in a low population density area*;
-
EUR 250,000 in support of artistic production or in the recovery or maintenance of national cultural heritage. EUR 200,000 in a low population density area* ;
Business: one of the following options
-
Creation of a minimum of ten new jobs. Eight new jobs in a low population density area* ;

EUR 500,000 for the incorporation of a commercial company that is registered and headquartered in Portugal, creating a minimum of five permanent jobs for a period of three years (or for the increase of the share capital of a company already incorporated and headquartered in Portugal, creating at least five permanent jobs or maintaining at least ten jobs for three years).
*A low population density area is defined as less than 100 inhabitants per km² or with a GDP per capita below 75% of the national average.​
